That kind of cross-checking is easier to absorb in text than in a video you would need to pause repeatedly, and it is the sort of thing worth bookmarking rather than half-remembering from something you watched once.
Understand the Science: Lubrication and Friction Data
This is the category most beginner resource lists skip entirely, and it is the one that explains why the advice in the first two categories works rather than just asserting it. SILCA's chain friction research breaks down exactly which surfaces inside a chain generate friction and corrects a common misconception about where lubrication actually matters. It is not a how-to. It is the reasoning underneath the how-to, and it is worth reading once you already know the basic steps, so the steps stop feeling arbitrary.
Zero Friction Cycling does the same job from the testing side. Founder Adam Kerin runs independent chain and lubricant testing at a scale most outlets cannot match, with no manufacturer funding riding on the result. Their lubricant testing data is the closest thing the sport has to an unbiased answer to "which lube is actually best," and it is worth reading before you buy the one with the loudest marketing rather than after.
Go Deeper: Pro-Level Standards and Technical Teardowns
Some questions need more depth than a how-to guide is built to provide. Escape Collective, written in large part by Dave Rome, a mechanic turned journalist with roughly two decades of hands-on experience, revisits standard advice like chain wear measurement at a depth most outlets skip entirely. It is a subscription publication, so not every article is a frictionless click, but the depth is genuinely different from anything free.
Bikerumor plays a similar role for component specifications, untangling things like the ISO-versus-JIS bottom bracket standard at a level of detail most riders never need until the day they need exactly that detail. Cyclingnews' tech coverage rounds this category out with what professional mechanics are actually doing at WorldTour level, useful context for understanding how conservative or aggressive your own maintenance schedule really is. None of these three are places to start. They are places to go once a basic guide has left you with a follow-up question it was not built to answer.
Straight From the Manufacturer
It is easy to assume manufacturer documentation is too dry or too generic to bother with, and skip straight to a third-party summary instead. That assumption gets it backwards. Independent sources are excellent for general standards that apply across brands. For your specific part, the manufacturer is the only source that cannot be second-guessed, because they wrote the specification everyone else is describing secondhand.
SRAM's service portal is a genuine hub: brand-by-brand navigation across SRAM, RockShox, and Zipp, a compatibility advisor, and searchable manuals down to individual component generations. Shimano's Technical Education site does the same job for Di2, Dura-Ace, Ultegra, and the rest of Shimano's range, with dealer manuals and service instructions searchable by series or model number.
Campagnolo's equivalent is less unified. Their support hub is the right entry point, but their documentation is more scattered than SRAM's or Shimano's, so expect to navigate rather than land directly on the exact PDF you want.
